Why This Young Filipino Karateka Is Just Getting Started

Eduardo "Thirdy" Berco III, a Grade 11 ABM student from the University of Mindanao Basic Education Department, represented the Philippines at the 12th Southeast Asian Karate Federation Championships held in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei, last June 17 to 19, 2025.

Thirdy competed in the Junior Kumite -61kg category, marking his first international tournament. Though he did not place, the experience was a significant milestone in his athletic journey, showcasing his commitment to growth and perseverance.

His selection to the national team came with a month-and-a-half training camp in Manila, where he faced intense physical and mental challenges. “Every day felt like a war,” he shared, referring to the discipline and independence the camp demanded.

Despite being eliminated early by a Vietnamese contender who went on to win silver, Thirdy viewed the experience as a learning opportunity. “I didn’t win, but I saw where I needed to go,” he said.

Since returning from Brunei, Thirdy has made a personal vow—to cut away distractions and pour his energy into training and his studies. He knows that the journey that he is on is a marathon, not a sprint. “This is just the beginning,” he said. “I’ll be better. I’ll be back.”

Thirdy is now preparing for two upcoming international tournaments: the Shureido International Open in Indonesia this July 4–7, and the Asia Karate Federation Championships in China later this year, where he will compete in both Kumite and Individual Kata.
