UM's First Patent: A Landmark in Innovation

A revolutionary test kit detects High Glucose & Protein in mining wastewater, thanks to Dr. Chosel P. Lawagon, Engr. Crijaica L. Oceña-Godoy, and Steph Kier Ponteras.

The University of Mindanao (UM) achieves a significant milestone with its first-ever patent for a revolutionary invention: a test kit detecting Mercury (Hg) and Lead (Pb) in Mining Wastewater. Dr. Chosel P. Lawagon, Engr. Crijaica L. Oceña-Godoy, and Steph Kier Ponteras (Chemical Engineering Student – YIP Grantee) secured the patent on January 19, 2024, valid until February 21, 2042.

Their research, funded by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) under the Young Innovators Program (YIP), titled, "HG and Pb Detection Utilizing d-Limonene from Sweet Oranges (Citrus Sinensis) Peelings," resulted in this breakthrough. Engr. Francis Louise Yap, TTIPMO Manager, guided the patent process under UM's Institute of Emerging Technologies.

In addition, the University of Mindanao Innovation and Technology Support Office (UM-ITSO) has been honored with the gold award for its exemplary work in patent research, offering IP capacity building, and providing drafting services to both internal and external clients. This prestigious recognition was bestowed by the International Property Office (IPO) during the President’s Summit held on March 28, 2023, at Sequoia Hotel Manila Bay, Parañaque City.

This achievement marks a significant stride for UM, showcasing its dedication to research and innovation. It reinforces UM's position as a leading institution in science and technology, setting the stage for future advancements.
