UMasenso Hub Empowers Innovators Through Intellectual Property Workshop

Davao City, Philippines — The University of Mindanao (UM) UMasenso Hub successfully conducted a two-day Intellectual Property (IP) Workshop for its four incubatees — Bukas Bukid, RLG Voltworks, Sobear, and TanUM Nanotech Solutions — along with select students from the Computer Engineering and Mechanical Engineering programs who are actively developing research-based innovations.
The initiative aimed to strengthen participants’ understanding of intellectual property protection and equip them with the technical skills required to safeguard their inventions and research outputs. As a university-based innovation and incubation hub, UMasenso continues to support startups and student researchers in transforming ideas into protected, commercially viable technologies that advance industry and contribute to sustainable development.

The first day focused on patent search strategies, training participants to conduct systematic prior art searches using established patent databases. The session emphasized evaluating novelty, analyzing existing technologies, understanding patent classifications, and assessing patentability to mitigate infringement risks. Participants practiced analytical skills through guided exercises to navigate the technological landscape of their innovations.
On the second day, participants explored patent drafting fundamentals, including the structure and essential components of a patent document — from the abstract and background of the invention to the detailed description, drawings, and claims. Hands-on drafting activities provided tailored technical guidance, ensuring clarity, precision, and legal soundness in their documentation.

The workshop was facilitated by Dyle Legaspi, ITSO Manager at UM, who shared expert insights on intellectual property rights. Participants gained practical skills in patentability assessment, improved their research articulation, and strengthened readiness for technology transfer and startup scaling.
This initiative aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), and SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure), promoting innovation-driven education, entrepreneurial growth, and strengthened research ecosystems.
The Intellectual Property Workshop reflects UMasenso Hub’s commitment to cultivating a culture of innovation, protecting intellectual property, and empowering researchers and startups to create sustainable, impactful solutions for society.
