UM Triumphs in Fostering a Unified Community

University of Mindanao holds its 3rd Community Extension Congress

In line with its mission to provide a dynamic learning environment through one of its fundamental functions—extension, the University of Mindanao (UM) successfully celebrated the Community Extension Congress on February 20, 2025. This annual event serves as a platform for knowledge-sharing, collaboration, and strengthening the university’s commitment to community development. This year’s congress was actively participated by various UM campuses. These campuses came together to showcase their respective community extension programs, share best practices, and develop new initiatives aimed at fostering sustainable community engagement.

The program commenced with a welcome address delivered by UM’s Chief Academic Officer Dr. Eugenio Guhao Jr. The congress also featured distinguished keynote speakers, including Dr. Liza C. Suan, CHED RO XI-Education Supervisor II, and Mr. Aldrin D. Dais, President of the Philippine Society of NSTP Educators and Implementers of the Davao Region. Both speakers emphasized the significant contribution and positive impact of the extension program on communities and individuals.

International volunteers from World Vision, a Christian humanitarian aid, development, and advocacy organization, were present at the congress. Mr. Jett Padawan and Mr. Carlo Cajipo shared insights on volunteering opportunities and the fulfillment derived from volunteerism, which transforms both individuals and communities.

The Community Extension Congress continues to affirm UM’s dedication to bridging the gap between academic institutions and communities. Through collaboration among faculty members, students, and stakeholders, the university remains steadfast in its mission to empower communities through education and meaningful engagement with them – a translation of SDG 17 Partnership for the Goals.

As the contest segment began, participating campuses showcased their remarkable works, each entry igniting creativity and innovation among the participants. UM Digos emerged as the Best Paper Presenter highlighting the “KISLAP or Kabataan Isulong ang Lahing Pinoy” banner project while the Best Poster was bagged by the Social Work Program of UM featuring the Relapse Prevention component of the Community-based Rehabilitation Program for the Drug Reformist. Lastly, UM Tagum College won the prize for the Best Audio Visual Presentation. Despite the competitive nature of the event, all participants expressed their appreciation for the experience, highlighting the spirit of learning and camaraderie.
