UM Celebrates IP And Music: Bringing The Pinoy Beat To The World

Last April 25, 2025, at AVR 2, GET Building, the University of Mindanao proudly celebrated the National Intellectual Property (IP) Month with the theme "IP and Music: Bringing the Pinoy Beat to the World." The event gathered students from the University Main Campus and the University of Mindanao Tagum Campus, faculty, and guests to deepen their understanding of intellectual property and its significant role in creativity, innovation, and global recognition.

The celebration featured three distinguished speakers: 𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐫. 𝐅𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐬 𝐋𝐨𝐮𝐢𝐬𝐞 𝐂. 𝐘𝐚𝐩 -opened the event with a discussion on the Foundations of Intellectual Property (Introduction to IP). His talk emphasized the importance of understanding copyrights, patents, trademarks, and the protection of innovative ideas. 𝐌𝐫. 𝐋𝐨𝐫𝐝 𝐃𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐬 - followed with a session on the Foundations of Startups. He highlighted how entrepreneurs can build and protect their businesses through intellectual property rights, underscoring the critical role of IP in the success of startups. 𝐌𝐬. 𝐍𝐢𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐥 𝐌𝐚𝐲 𝐄. 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐧- concluded the speaking engagements with her insights on "Intellectual Property and Music", sharing how Filipino artists can leverage IP laws to bring the unique "Pinoy Beat" to the global stage, protecting and promoting their creative works internationally.

The event aimed to educate the University of Mindanao community about the value of intellectual property, encourage innovation and entrepreneurship, and inspire students and creators to pursue global opportunities while safeguarding their original works.

This celebration aligns with several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly 𝗦𝗗𝗚 𝟰: 𝗤𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗘𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, by promoting knowledge and understanding of intellectual property. 𝗦𝗗𝗚 𝟴: 𝗗𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗘𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘁𝗵, empowering startups and creative industries. 𝗦𝗗𝗚 𝟵: 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆, 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗜𝗻𝗳𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲, by supporting innovation through IP rights. 𝗦𝗗𝗚 𝟭𝟳: 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗚𝗼𝗮𝗹𝘀, through fostering collaboration between creators, entrepreneurs, and institutions.
