UM Biology Students Join Microbiology Class at Thailand University

The Science Silpakorn International Summer School – Microbiology Masterclass convened emerging scientists and mentors from Southeast Asia for an intensive academic program held at Silpakorn University, Sanam Chandra Palace Campus, located in Nakhon Pathom, Thailand, last May 21 to May 24, 2025. Representing the University of Mindanao and the Philippines, the delegation included Rolando III L. Gesolgon and Glendale P. Absin (BS Biology, Major in Ecology students), alongside esteemed faculty members Dr. Normeliza E. Morales and Mr. Mark Angelou M. Siega, MSc.

Hands-on sessions were conducted by leading experts in the field. Dr. Orawan Borirak presented on Aerobic Plate Count and Agar Art, while Dr. Kampanat Promlok covered Bacterial DNA Extraction. Lastly, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ckaphan Bangyikhan discussed PCR Amplification of Bacterial DNA.

The program fostered not only scientific growth but also cultural exchange, with participants from Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand, and the Philippines, including representatives from Caraga State University and UP Los Baños.
This meaningful participation aligns with the University of Mindanao’s commitment to SDG 4: Quality Education and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, championing global academic engagement and building sustainable partnerships in microbiology and beyond.
