CGNIES Marks 3rd Year of Advancing Nano-Innovations for Environmental Solutions

Davao City, Philippines – The Center for Green Nanotechnology Innovations for Environmental Solutions (CGNIES) proudly celebrates its third year of advancing nano-innovations to address pressing environmental challenges in the Davao Region and Mindanao.
Inaugurated on August 19, 2022, by UM President and CEO Dr. Guillermo P. Torres, Jr., together with representatives from the Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Council for Industry, Energy, and Emerging Technology Research and Development (DOST-PCIEERD), the Center has since grown significantly. From hosting only three projects at its launch, CGNIES now manages a total of nine research projects funded by both DOST-PCIEERD and the DOST–PCAARRD.

Under the leadership of Dr. Chosel P. Lawagon, the Center stands as one of the 38 laboratories established under the DOST-PCIEERD Institution Development Program (IDP), which supports the establishment and upgrading of research laboratories in academic and research institutions nationwide.
Above all of these projects, the center continues to capacitate faculty members and the students. It’s a significant best practice as well is the Mentorship on Engineering Research for Multidisciplinary Application and Innovations Dedicated for the STEM Strand or MERMAIDSS Program.

The milestones of CGNIES also reflect its contribution to advancing SDG 4: Quality Education, through mentorship and training, SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure by driving scientific research and building advanced laboratory capacity, and SDG 13: Climate Action by generating innovative environmental solutions that help address the region’s sustainability challenges.
