Strengthening Research and Global Partnerships: UM Hosts Exit Report Presentation of Balik Scientists

Davao City, Philippines – The University of Mindanao, in partnership with the University of St. La Salle (USLS) and the University of Negros Occidental–Recoletos (UNO-R), and in collaboration with the Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Council for Industry, Energy, and Emerging Technology Research and Development (DOST-PCIEERD), hosted the Exit Report Presentation (ERP) of two Balik Scientists on August 13, 2025 at the Cagliari Hall, UM Matina Campus, Davao City.

The activity highlighted the contributions of Dr. Chosel P. Lawagon, a DOST-PCIEERD long-term Balik Scientist hosted by UM, and Dr. Khino Parohinog, a DOST-PCIEERD medium-term Balik Scientist hosted by UM, USLS, and UNO-R.

The ceremony was attended by DOST-PCIEERD officials, led by Executive Director Dr. Enrico C. Paringit, who delivered a virtual congratulatory message, and Undersecretary for Research and Development Dr. Leah Buendia, who served as the Keynote Speaker. Also present were representatives and officials from the host institutions UM, USLS, and UNO-R, as well as delegates from the City Government of Kidapawan.

University officials and government representatives underscored the significance of the Balik Scientist Program (BSP), emphasizing that hosting Balik Scientists not only strengthens the research capability of universities but also inspires faculty-researchers and students to engage in pioneering scientific endeavors.

This collaborative effort reflects the university’s role in advancing SDG 4: Quality Education, by enriching academic and research training, and SDG 7: Partnerships for the Goals, by fostering strong linkages among higher education institutions, government, and local communities.

Through the momentum generated by the BSP, UM continues to position itself as a hub for transformative and impactful research, empowering communities and reinforcing the Philippines’ presence in the global arena of science and technology.
