Dr. Lawagon Champions Waste Upcycling at ECCP Climate Forum

In a powerful display of science in service of sustainability, Dr. Chosel P. Lawagon, a long-term Balik Scientist under the Department of Science and Technology – PCIEERD and the Assistant Vice President for Innovation and Natural Science Studies at the University of Mindanao's Research and Publication Center, took center stage at the 2025 Climate Solutions Forum hosted by the European Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines (ECCP).

Held at Dusit Thani Hotel, Davao City, the forum gathered key climate leaders, researchers, policymakers, and private sector champions to explore cross-sectoral solutions to the climate crisis. Dr. Lawagon delivered an insightful presentation on upcycling waste through nanotechnology, spotlighting how scientific innovation can transform environmental challenges into opportunities for green growth.

Her presentation emphasized how nanotechnology can convert industrial and agricultural waste into high-value materials, contributing to the country’s circular economy agenda. By linking research with industry application, Dr. Lawagon demonstrated how science-based innovations can lower carbon emissions, strengthen local manufacturing sectors, and build long-term climate resilience.

As a Filipino Balik Scientist, Dr. Lawagon’s active engagement in national and global sustainability conversations underscores the critical role of the Balik Scientist Program in bringing home world-class expertise to solve pressing local problems.

The University of Mindanao and DOST-PCIEERD continue to support platforms that bridge science and society, ensuring Filipino ingenuity is at the heart of climate action.
