University of Mindanao and DSWD Region XI Forge Partnership to Strengthen Community Empowerment Initiatives

In a significant step toward advancing inclusive development and poverty alleviation, the University of Mindanao and the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Region XI officially sealed a partnership last July 24, 2025.
The ceremonial signing was led by UM President Dr. Guillermo P. Torres Jr. and DSWD Regional Director Dr. Rhuelo D. Aradanas, represented by Assistant Regional Director for Operations Merlinda A. Paragamac. Witnessing the event was UM Assistant Vice President for Community Extension and Outreach, Sitti Rogaiya L. Apadan, alongside SOCI Coordinators from various UM campuses.
Under the signed agreement, UM and DSWD Region XI committed to working together on a range of initiatives focused on community empowerment and sustainable development. Among these are:
The Sustainable Livelihood Program (SLP): Provides technical assistance and entrepreneurial tools aimed at improving the economic stability of vulnerable communities.
The Micro-Enterprise Development and Skills Training Program: Connects individuals to financial and technical support, enhancing their capacity to establish and grow income-generating activities.
The Community Research Engagement Program (CREP): Facilitates collaborative research to reinforce and evaluate DSWD’s social protection strategies.
This initiative champions SDG 1: No Poverty by promoting poverty reduction through sustainable livelihood programs. SDG 4: Quality Education, enhancing access to quality education and skills training. SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth and SDG 17: Partnership to Achieve the Goal, fostering decent work opportunities, and strengthening multi-sectoral collaboration for inclusive community development.
Both institutions expressed strong confidence that the partnership will deliver lasting and impactful outcomes for communities across Davao Region, as both share the same purpose of existence – to help less fortunate families overcome poverty.
