Here's Why UM Champions Literacy in Davao Community Through a Reading Intervention Program

Armed with a mission to shape future leaders through literacy, the University of Mindanao’s Basic Education faculty and staff have gone beyond the classroom to make a difference. From January to March 2025, they carried out a Reading Intervention Program benefiting Grade 3 and 4 students at Prisco Diolosa Elementary School in Brgy. Biao Guianga, Tugbok District, Davao City.

Spearheaded by Community Extension Coordinator Ms. Rochelle Andante, the initiative focused on improving reading and comprehension skills among young learners—some of whom struggle with basic literacy. “Today a reader, tomorrow a leader,” the famous quote by Margaret Fuller, served as both mantra and motivation for the program.

Held over four months, the sessions involved small-group and one-on-one reading activities, designed to cater to each student’s learning pace. Children were given storybooks and reading materials followed by comprehension questions. The consistent practice helped many tutees enunciate words more clearly and read with growing confidence.

“The kids were so eager to learn. We saw real progress in just a few sessions,” shared one of the volunteer teachers.

Beyond the academics, the program also brought joy to the students. After each session, participants received snacks as a reward for their participation and attentiveness. School supplies donated by UM Basic Education students added an extra layer of support, making the initiative not only educational but heartwarming.

“This is more than just about reading,” said Ms. Andante. “It’s about opening doors and building a foundation for lifelong learning.” This initiative very well supports the Sustainable Development Goal 4: Quality Education by ensuring equitable quality education for all. As the program wrapped up in March 2025, both teachers and students celebrated not only improved literacy but also a strengthened sense of community. With continued efforts like these, UM Basic Education hopes to nurture a generation that reads well, leads well, and learns with purpose.
