Campus to Global Spotlight: How CTE Student Represents UM in AYIMUN 2025

Tashnem Cariga, a 4th-year Bachelor of Elementary Education (BEEd) student, had the privilege of representing the University of Mindanao at the 16th Asia Youth International Model United Nations (AYIMUN). The prestigious event took place from January 17–20, 2025, at the Berjaya Times Square Hotel in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. It provided an invaluable platform for youth leaders from around the globe to discuss pressing global issues and propose actionable solutions.

The international conference commenced with the arrival of delegates from various countries. That evening, the opening ceremony and gala dinner were held, featuring remarks from the AYIMUN CEO and a distinguished guest speaker. Delegates were also introduced to the specific councils where they would participate in discussions.

This participation strengthens the university’s strong implementation of SDG 4 on Quality Education and SDG 17 Partnerships for the Goals. This shows that the university is honing students to be globally competitive and equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to address global challenges.

Tash served as a delegate of the Malaysian Federation in the UNICEF Council, focusing on the issue of “Prevention of Child Soldier Recruitment.” During the General Speakers’ List, she articulated her country’s stance on the issue, emphasizing the need to protect children from armed conflicts. She actively engaged in the moderated and unmoderated caucuses, contributing to discussions on motions such as redirecting financial resources from military activities toward strengthening education systems in affected countries. Her participation demonstrated a strong commitment to advocating for sustainable and child-centered solutions.

Tash gained firsthand insights into United Nations processes and the collaborative efforts of its councils in resolving global challenges. The experience affirmed her belief in the importance of empowering youth to act as catalysts for change.
