Beyond Luck: The Secret Behind UM Grad’s Top 2 Finish in the August 2025 Mechanical Engineering Licensure Exam

Engr. Marjun B. Espinosa, Top 2 in the August 2025 Mechanical Engineering Licensure Exam
Success is not only about the result but also about how much you grow along the way.
What does it truly take for someone to rank among the board exam topnotchers? Is it luck that helps them achieve that dream? Or is there something far deeper that propels them to that victory? For a University of Mindanao graduate and a topnotcher, the answer lies in core qualities that go beyond mere luck.
From moments of self-doubt to a triumphant finish, Marjun B. Espinosa, a graduate of Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, proved that consistency, discipline, and perseverance are vital in achieving success as he ranked second in the August 2025 Mechanical Engineering Licensure Exam with a 92.30% exam rating.
His journey to the top wasn’t a walk in the park, because during his preparation, he was flustered with the challenge of learning countless lessons within a short period of time. However, he remained resilient and was able to develop a strategy that helped him significantly in the long run.
“My biggest challenge was the overwhelming volume of concepts I had to master in such a limited time. Sometimes I felt that missing even one topic would ruin everything. To overcome that, I developed the habit of pausing whenever I felt overloaded. I would step back, reorganize my plan, and focus on what really mattered. That way, I could move forward with clarity instead of being paralyzed by stress."
When asked further about his study routines and habits, he mentioned that beyond mastering the basics of a lesson and setting daily goals, he emphasized the importance of remaining consistent amid all challenges and uncertainties, taking pauses, and making the most of his time.
“For me, consistency mattered most. I studied long hours, but I also made sure to master the basics first before moving on to the advanced topics. I created daily targets so I could track my progress and avoid just studying aimlessly. Reviewing is not just about how much time you spend, but also about how effectively you use that time. Taking short breaks also helped me recharge and avoid burnout.”
He mentioned that while he had once dreamt of topping the boards, he actually never imagined it to really happen. So when he found out that he really ranked second in the board exam, the moment filled him with an overwhelming mix of emotions.
“Honestly, I dreamt about it, but I never imagined it would really happen. I just gave my best every day and trusted the process. When I finally saw my name as the second placer, it was surreal. I felt a mix of joy, relief, and gratitude.”
Throughout his journey, the dream of excelling in the board exam was just part of his motivation. What truly boosted him to reach for the stars was the unconditional support of his loved ones, mentors, and peers that constantly reminded him that every step of his journey was as much for them as it was for himself.
“My motivation came from my dream of passing and even topping the board exam. But beyond that, it was my family and loved ones who pushed me to keep going. Their sacrifices reminded me that my success would also be theirs. I also had mentors and peers who encouraged me along the way, reminding me that hard work pays off.”
Looking back, Espinosa also credited the University of Mindanao for teaching him resilience through academics, leadership roles, and an environment of supportive professors and classmates that equipped him for success in the board exam.
Now that he is finally a licensed Mechanical Engineer, he looks forward to gaining professional experience and earning a master’s degree to deepen his expertise in the field. Beyond professional growth, he hopes to give back to others, especially among aspiring engineers, through teaching.
“My next step is to gain professional experience while working toward my goal of becoming a Professional Mechanical Engineer. In the future, I also plan to pursue a master’s degree, possibly in mechatronics, to deepen my expertise. At the same time, I want to give back by mentoring aspiring engineers and sharing what I’ve learned, because I believe that knowledge multiplies when it’s shared.”
Finally, Espinosa’s advice for all aspiring engineers is simple yet meaningful, highlighting the value of perseverance and consistency.
“Believe in your dreams and stay committed to them. The road will not be easy; you’ll face doubts, challenges, and failures along the way, but don’t let those stop you. Stay consistent, stay disciplined, and surround yourself with people who lift you up. And most importantly, enjoy the journey. Success is not only about the result but also about how much you grow along the way.”
The journey of Engr. Marjun B. Espinosa is a testament that there is no elevator to success, as the secret behind his victory was deeply rooted in consistency, discipline, and the ability to turn uncertainty into a light of glory.
