36 Sacks of Garbage Collected in UM-Led Coastal Clean-Up in Davao City

Davao City, Philippines - The University of Mindanao strengthened its commitment to environmental sustainability by joining the National Coastal Clean-Up Month through a coastal clean-up drive held on September 20, 2025, at Tambongon, Lasang, Davao City.

The initiative was led by the UM Main Campus – Community Extension Center and the UM Administrative Employees Association, in partnership with the Davao City Agriculturist Office, Barangay Lasang, and the Tambongon Fisherfolk Association (TAMFIAS).

A total of 25 UM personnel and 14 TAMFIAS volunteers collected 36 sacks of garbage from the coastline. The City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) will oversee proper waste disposal, while recyclable plastics will be repurposed for fish cage construction, aligning the project with sustainable practices.

The activity supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, specifically SDG 14: Life Below Water and SDG 15: Life on Land, by promoting marine conservation, protecting coastal ecosystems, and reducing pollution.

Community members expressed their appreciation, noting the positive impact of the initiative on preserving Tambongon’s coastal environment. The area is especially significant as it contributes nearly 30 percent of Davao City’s seafood supply.

Through this initiative, UM reaffirmed its dedication to environmental protection, community engagement, and sustainable development, underscoring its role in shaping a cleaner and healthier future for both people and marine ecosystems.
