159 Alumni and Students Attend the Nihongo Language Scholarship Grant Orientation

The University of Mindanao conducted an orientation session for the Nihongo Language Scholarship Grant on Saturday, May 17, 2025, from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM at the Mini Auditorium. The event was attended by 159 alumni and graduating students, signaling a significant milestone in UM’s commitment to equipping its graduates with global competencies through language education and overseas employment opportunities.
This scholarship is a product of the growing collaboration between UM, LEAD, and Kagawa Prefecture in Japan. The partnership aims to promote international exchange and cultural relations while addressing labor and language challenges through comprehensive train-and-learn programs in Japan.
The initiative also highlights the strong coordination between various UM units, including the Institute of Languages under the College of Arts and Sciences, the Alumni Affairs Office, and the Office of Academic Affairs. The initiative aligns with SDG 4 - Quality Education by promoting inclusive, equitable, and relevant learning opportunities beyond the classroom. It aims to develop UM students’ competencies in language, culture, and workplace readiness, fostering lifelong learning and global career mobility.
During the orientation, participants were briefed on the scholarship's benefits, eligibility requirements, and grantee responsibilities. The session also featured motivational video messages from past scholars, which inspired many attendees to pursue this opportunity with renewed enthusiasm.
This program is a key component of UM’s strategic goal to internationalize education and training. By fostering regional and global partnerships, the university aims to create meaningful opportunities for its students and alumni, ultimately contributing to the growth and global visibility of the UM community.
