120 Residents Benefit from Free Medical Services Under CHSE UMagapay Program

The College of Health and Sciences Education (CHSE) successfully conducted a Medical Mission on February 22, 2025, in Barangay Catigan, Davao City. This event is part of the University’s extension program and highlights the college’s continued dedication to offering accessible healthcare and fostering health literacy in local communities. This medical mission is part of the college flagship program called “CHSE UMagapay”.

Recognizing the critical need for healthcare awareness, CHSE launched this project to bridge the gap in medical knowledge and services, particularly among the Bagobo Tagabawa Indigenous Community in Barangay Catigan. The initiative was also in response to the community’s expressed concerns about the limited access to accurate health information and medical assistance. By addressing these gaps, the college aimed to enhance community understanding of essential healthcare practices and the importance of preventive measures thus aligning with UN SDG #3 on Good Health and Well-being.

The team of volunteers was led by Dean Ofelia Lariego. The event began with educational sessions discussing the use of Antibiotics and Resistance; Prescription Drugs vs. Over-the-counter Drugs, medications, vitamins, and supplements; and Prohibited Drugs and their legalities. These topics caught the attention of many residents as they realized they had misconceptions about taking certain medications, unaware that some of their choices were actually harmful to their health conditions.

The activity included a free medical consultation and recorded a total of 120 residents from various age groups who utilized the medical services. Meanwhile, three volunteer doctors conducted the check-ups, while the nursing faculty and students took turns measuring the patient's vital signs. Blood testing for those among the adult and elderly population is also part of the services offered.

CHSE UMagapay Medical Mission offers invaluable experience to student volunteers, giving them the opportunity to apply their knowledge in practical settings while fostering a sense of social responsibility. CHSE is committed to promoting community health, and future initiatives will prioritize expanding outreach efforts and strengthening partnerships within the community to create a lasting impact on public health. This initiative supports CHSE's mission of making healthcare education and services more accessible, ensuring that all communities, especially indigenous groups, receive the medical care they deserve.
